I rarely send along a direct plea - this is an exception. Readers of this blog know about my love of New Orleans and Southwest Louisiana. Music is their common denominator.
From my New Orleans friend, videographer and writer Deborah Cotton, I've seen how music can literally save kids' lives. Too often, blood is spilled on the streets, the places where kids congregate. The film "A Whole Gritty City" tells the story of men like Wilbert Rawins, Jr. who care about those kids and the music their generation must pass on to the city that created it. Passing on the gift of music will keep both a tradition and a generation alive.
Yes. The documentary film "A Whole Gritty City" has been made.
No, the filmmakers havent scraped up the money to cover sound mixing, color correction, titles, graphics, insurance and legal costs. They've raised $47,107 as of 10:45 today. Their goal is $50,000.
I realize this sounds like an NPR appeal but raising less than $3000 in the next 45 hours will get the job done. I've contributed twice.

"The Whole Gritty City is a documentary feature film that plunges viewers into the world of New Orleans marching bands. It's a story of mentors helping kids get past the lures and dangers of the streets and make it to adulthood, as they pass on a powerful musical legacy."
