Ricardo's rodeo partner Gato Ledezma (bottom R), his father Don Pio (top R), and caretaker Juanito Perez practice for the upcoming rodeo in Con Con early this morning. Ricardo practiced earlier this morning. Chilean rodeo description http://ptatlarge.typepad.com/ptatlarge/2011/01/2011-dispatches-from-chile-chilean-rodeos-real-cowboys.html
Ricardo picks spinach for lunch today - doesn't get any fresher than this! To the left of the spinach, tomatoes plants which are just beginning to ripen. An early frost this December ruined lots of fruits and vegetables usually growing in abundance on the farm: apricots, figs, lemons, limes, watermelon, honeydew melons to name a few.
Maestro of the fields Don Pedro poles he'll use to support the seeds from organically grown tomatoes Ricardo's son brought to the farm. The bamboo he's using for the poles grows on the farm.
Ricardo's sisters Uka and Veronica, with their daughters Marcelita and Nicole, pay a visit after lunch.
Marcelita is in a five year program studying commercial industrial design in Valparaiso. Nicole is studying early childhood education at the University of Chile in Santiago. Given the growth in population and burgeoning commercial economy, their job prospects are good.
Sun begins to set around 8:15 PM, dusk fades into evening about an hour later... another day at the farm begins to wind down.
