The annual Festival of Lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists
One of my favorite holidays during my two years serving in the Peace Corps in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India...it symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance".
Hindus were well-versed in stories of gods and goddesses in religious history. Men I worked with enjoyed telling me, perhaps the only American they ever met, richly detailed stories about the hierarchy including Rama and Situ, Vishnu, Krishna, Lakshmi, Shiva, Kali and Ganesh.
